Complex geometry such as castings and forgings are very difficult to size using traditional hand calculations due to irregular shapes and cross sectional thickness variation. FEA lends itself to this type of geometry very well.

On the other hand,  frequently used components such as bolts, bearings and pins etc are often sized using mathematical formulas. Finite Element Analysis complements rather than replaces traditional hand calculations and both methods can be compared for extra peace of mind.

For fatigue assessment or checking if designs comply with British Standards or ASME codes it is often beneficial to present  hand calculations in Mathcad.

Hand calculations are often used for checking FEA models and are invaluable for convincing others that your FEA results are trustworthy.  Take a look at our Finite Element Course to learn more about checking FEA results with hand calculations.
