One of the most common errors when doing hand calculations is making a mistake with the units. With Mathcad you can mix and match your units between metric and imperial and it will do the conversion for you. It will also automatically check your equations for mathematical errors.

It is a superb tool for presenting stress calculations because you can input formulas into it as you would expect to see them if you were writing them down with pen and paper. This makes the calculations easy to check even by people who don't have Mathcad.

One of the drawbacks is that it doesn’t handle extremely repetitive calculations as good as excel would but you can still embed excel spreadsheets into your documents. You can also plot graphs, run solvers and much more.

Pros: presenting stress and other calculations, automatic unit conversion, automatic checking

Cons: limited functionality for creating highly repetitive tables of calculations
