Large fabricated structures such as cranes and structural steelwork often require code compliance to BS 2573, BS 5950 or other standards. The stress calculations can be performed using hand calculations or FEA but the stress values must comply with the requirements of the code. Duty and impact factors are often supplied in the codes as are permissible stress limits.
Bolted and welded joints are of particular concern as is buckling. Seismic analysis is important for nuclear applications. There are higher factors of safety in cranes than in automotive and aerospace industries.
