Engineering | Finite Element Analysis | Stress

A typical stress analysis will involve finding accurate stress values either by hand
calculations or FEA. Detailed fatigue assessments can be carried out to determine
the components durability. Reserve factors could be calculated by taking into account
temperature, surface finish, surface treatments and size factors using SN curves.
Other considerations would be thermal expansion, bolt preload, noise & vibration
and creep. Most of the analysis is geared up to finding potential problems prior
to physical testing of prototypes. Aerospace and Automotive companies have rigorous
testing procedures that must be satisfied.
Large cost savings can be achieved by optimisation of parts and assemblies for weight
and material volume reduction. This can be achieved with Finite Element Analysis
and modifications fed back into the design process.
